ABOUT OL PEJETA’S APU DOG UNIT

Anti-poaching dogs are an extremely effective tool when it comes to protecting rhinos and other iconic wildlife.  Alongside their human handlers Ol Pejeta’s dog unit is made up of specialist scent dogs, trackers, and attack dogs, who work seamlessly to form an incredibly successful anti-poaching team.

Dogs are brilliant hunters and detectors. They have tremendous stamina, a great sense of smell, and are extremely fast. They can alert rangers to the presence of a poacher up to a kilometre away and find hidden arms and ammunition.

With dogs, anti-poaching teams are now much better equipped to track and detect at night and can cover greater ground. There is no technology that works better than our canine friends.

YOUR ADOPTION REALLY DOES HELP PROTECT RHINOS

When you adopt an APU (Anti-Poaching Unit) dog pack, you will be helping with:

Tracking and detection: Supporting highly trained dogs used to track poachers and detect wildlife contraband like rhino horns or ivory.

Rapid response: Assisting the team with swift deployment in anti-poaching operations, increasing the chances of intercepting poachers before they harm wildlife.

Protection of endangered species: Contributing directly to safeguarding vulnerable animals, such as rhinos and elephants, from illegal poaching activities.

Ongoing care and training: Providing for the dogs’ food, veterinary care, and continuous training to keep them in peak condition for fieldwork.

Supporting handlers: Helping equip and train the dogs’ handlers: fostering strong human-dog partnerships is crucial for successful anti-poaching efforts.

Your adoption ensures the dog pack remains an effective tool in the fight against wildlife crime.

A small percentage of your adoption will be used to cover administration and operating costs.
