A hugely exciting update from our project-partners The Kariega Foundation that world famous poaching survivor Thandi has given birth to another calf.
At present we do not know whether the new arrival is a boy or a girl, but with this birth Thandi’s number of offspring has now risen to six. Combined with three grand- calves, Thandi has (so far) created a legacy of nine rhinos that wouldn’t be here had she not survived that brutal attack 14 years ago.
Thandi’s Story
Thandi, meaning love, became known around the world after she survived being targeted by poachers in March 2012. Thandi was one of three rhinos attacked that night, and tragically she was the only one to survive.
Despite her horrific injuries Thandi always showed a will to survive, and thanks to the dedication and care of the Kariega staff, as well as wildlife veterinarian Dr William Fowlds and his team, she has gone on to thrive.
Following the horrific injuries she suffered in the attack, there was no way of knowing if Thandi would be able to bear young. So, when she gave birth to a female calf in 2015 it was a true cause for celebration. Since then, Thandi has seen her family continue to grow, and with each new arrival she reminds us of the importance of saving every rhino that we can. From one survivor we now have a legacy of nine rhinos that is adding to the global population of this threatened species, and inspiring global action.
Thandi’s story bought the reality of rhino poaching into sharp focus for people around the world, and her legacy continues to inspire action for her species. But we have only reached this point because of the support of people like you, who saw her struggle and acted. Thandi’s story turned from one of tragedy to hope, but for too many rhinos that is not the case. Donate today to support our work protecting rhino populations across Africa and be a part of this conservation legacy.
